This happened back when I was attending a vocational school.
At the time, I was living with my boyfriend. It was a day off, so we were getting ready to go out somewhere together, but I couldn't find my flip phone no matter where I looked. So I asked my boyfriend, "Hey, can you call my phone? I'll listen for where the ringtone's coming from."
When he dialed my number, I heard my ringtone coming from somewhere in the room. Realizing it was inside the closet, I opened the door, dug around, and found it. Apparently, it was in the pocket of a jacket. I almost never put anything in my clothes pockets, but somehow I'd slipped my phone into this one (I can't remember why I did it).
"Found it! Thanks," I said, and just as I thanked him, my phone stopped ringing, and my boyfriend started speaking into his.
"Oh... I'm so sorry, I have the wrong number. Apologies."
Before I could even process what was happening, he hung up and said, "Wait... I just got connected to some middle-aged guy I don't know."
"Hold on, you were calling my phone, right?" I asked. We checked each other's call logs... and sure enough, the outgoing call to my number was right there. Just to test it, I had him call my flip phone again. Naturally, my phone rang, and I was the only one there to answer it.
"I swear, a guy with a deep voice answered and said, 'Who is this?' When I apologized, he just grunted, 'Yeah.'"
Is it even possible for a phone call to misroute like that and connect to someone else entirely? I asked people I knew who were tech-savvy, but they insisted that kind of glitch simply doesn't happen. I felt the same way. I wondered if my boyfriend was pranking me, but he wasn't the type to do something like that. Besides, he turned pale and was visibly shaken by it for days after, so I know he really did speak to someone. But if that's true, who on earth was on the other end of the line that day?
By the way, that boyfriend is now my husband. Even today, we still occasionally bring it up and wonder what that was all about, but whenever he needs to reach me, he sends a text instead of calling.
