The Smartphone Ghost

The Smartphone Ghost

This is a story about my friend T (not her real name), who told me about a creepily bizarre experience she had.

T had a habit of scrolling through her phone in bed until she got sleepy. One night, as she was mindlessly flicking through social media and watching videos as usual, an unexpected wave of anxiety suddenly washed over her.

She looked around her room, but nothing seemed out of place. Wondering what was wrong, she decided it was time to sleep. But just as she turned off her screen and started to lay her phone down by her pillow, she realized what was causing her unease.

You know how when a smartphone screen goes dark, it acts like a mirror and reflects your face? Well, T says that at that moment, the reflection wasn't her own face.

"Its eyes were pitch black, and even though I have short hair, the person reflected in the screen had long hair. It was definitely someone else."

Terrified, T screamed and threw her phone aside. When she timidly leaned in to check again, the screen naturally showed only her own reflection.

"Are you sure you didn't accidentally open some horror website or something?" I asked, but T insisted she hadn't. The screen was definitely blacked out, and she hadn't been watching anything scary. Ever since that night, T barely touches her phone unless she absolutely has to, but she says it opened her eyes to something else.

"Everyone is always staring at their phones. It's almost creepy."

Sure enough, whenever I look around, someone is almost certainly glued to their phone. In crowded places, the sight of everyone staring blankly down at a screen is nothing short of uncanny. Since T stopped using her phone so much, I followed her lead and tried to cut back too. It feels like we talk a lot more now.

"I don't know if it was a ghost or what, and it terrified me, but I guess I'm kind of grateful it made me stop looking at my phone all the time."

Listening to T made me realize something: smartphones really are like mirrors. There are plenty of scary urban legends about mirrors, so if we spend all day staring into one, maybe it's not so surprising when something supernatural happens.
