There was once a little girl named Aya.
Born with a weak heart, she spent her brief life going in and out of the hospital.
When Aya was in first grade, she suffered a sudden cardiac episode during class and was rushed to the hospital.
Although doctors managed to save her life for the moment, they summoned her family to inform them that Aya's heart had reached its limit, telling them to prepare for the inevitable.
That night, mother and daughter spoke softly in the hospital room.
"Mommy, I'm scared," Aya whispered.
"...It's okay, Aya. The place you're going to is higher than the stars. It's warm, with beautiful flowers blooming as far as the eye can see. You'll live in a grand mansion, with all the pretty clothes and delicious food you could ever want. Kind angels will always be right beside you. It's a wonderful, wonderful place. There's nothing to be afraid of at all."
"Really?"
"Really. I promise."
Shortly after that, Aya's condition suddenly took a turn for the worse, and she passed away.
After the wake and funeral ended, the traditional forty-nine days of mourning passed, though her mother's grief remained as raw as ever.
Lost in despair, time simply marched on.
Knowing she couldn't stay despondent forever, the mother gathered her strength and set out to clean and organize Aya's room—a room she hadn't entered since the night of the wake.
Standing before the door, she steeled herself and stepped inside.
The room was completely unchanged from when Aya was still alive...
...Wait.
A single school notebook lay right in the middle of the floor.
There hadn't been any notebook lying there the last time she was in the room, and there was no way her husband would have left one in a spot like that.
On the cover, written in Aya's unmistakable handwriting, were the words: To Mommy.
Puzzled, she opened the cover.
In red ink.
Crammed across every single line.
