This is something that happened to me back when I was in fifth grade.
I loved playing on the playground equipment, and the monkey bars were my absolute favorite.
Aside from the regular monkey bars on the sports field, there was a massive set next to the school building that we called the Giant Monkey Bars. As the name suggested, it was much larger, wider, and longer than normal ones, so my friends and I would often race across the top to see who could reach the other side first.
Looking back, it was probably a dangerous game—sometimes kids would fall and get hurt, or trip when their feet got caught between the rungs—but back then, we didn't think twice about it. It was just as popular as any other game on the playground.
One lunch break, a few classmates and I decided to play on the Giant Monkey Bars as usual, climbing up in high spirits.
A friend shouted, “Ready, set, go!” and we took off running. Just as we were about to reach the end, the friend in front of me froze dead in his tracks, stared down below the bars, and screamed.
Thinking he’d stepped on a bug or something, I looked down at our feet—only to see something grotesque staring back up at us.
At first, my brain couldn't process what I was looking at, and both my mind and body completely froze. But as the seconds ticked by, its features came into sharp focus.
It had a stark white face and a mouth split open all the way to its temples, revealing countless teeth.
And coming out from where its eyes should have been were hands.
I couldn't even scream; I just stood there trembling violently as those hands emerging from its eyes began reaching up toward us.
My body was paralyzed, refusing to move.
Just as consciousness began to slip away, our classmates on the ground started shouting for a teacher who was patrolling the yard. The next thing I knew, I was at the bottom of the monkey bars, held in the teacher's arms.
Everyone was in tears, worrying about me, and the friend who had screamed earlier was squeezing my hand, on the verge of crying himself.
I found out later that the thing had appeared out of nowhere right after our race started.
One friend told me, “After the signal was given and you two started running, I was watching you guys, and then suddenly that thing was right under you. Like it belonged there all along...”
Up until then, I had never heard of any actual school apparitions. There were the usual urban legends about the Seven Wonders of the school, but I’d never heard of anyone actually experiencing something real.
But after this incident, rumors spread that kids getting injured on the Giant Monkey Bars were actually having their legs pulled by that bizarre entity. Before long, yellow-and-black hazard rope was wrapped all around the bars, rendering them off-limits.
